Only materializes late, bored, or lonely.
The 2am Texter has a very specific schedule: nothing at lunch, nothing after work, nothing when plans could actually form — and then, past midnight, your phone lights up. 'wyd 😏'. 'you up?' 'thinking about you lol.'
Here's the read, minus the sugar: a person's texting hours tell you which part of their life you're filed under. Daylight texts mean you're in the plans section. Exclusively-2am texts mean you're in the entertainment section, somewhere between a fridge check and a scrolling session.
The signs
- ·The clock is the pattern. Map his texts by hour. If the histogram starts at 11pm, that's the whole analysis.
- ·Low-effort openers, high-suggestion follow-ups. 'wyd' costs him three letters and asks you to carry everything after it.
- ·Daylight plans die on the vine. Propose lunch and watch the enthusiasm evaporate. Night him and day him have different phone numbers.
- ·Weekends are silent until they aren't. No plans Friday, but a 1am 'where are you' when his night winds down empty.

It's not a question, it's an inventory check. He's seeing what's available, and 'available' is the operative word.
“come over lol”
The 'lol' is load-bearing — it's there so the ask can pretend it was casual if you say no.
The play
First, an honest fork: if a low-stakes late-night thing is what you want, fine — take it, on purpose, with your eyes open. The problem isn't the 2am text. It's answering the 2am text while hoping it turns into brunch. It doesn't turn into brunch. So:
- ·Run the daylight test. 'Ha, I'm asleep — but I'm free for lunch Saturday.' A person who wants you takes daylight. A 2am texter suddenly has a busy week.
- ·Stop rewarding the night shift. Every warm 1am reply teaches him the three-letter text works. Let it not work.
- ·Decide what shelf you're okay being on. Then act like it — no resentment, no auditioning. Just pricing.
