The Green Flag In Progress
Trying visibly, improving with feedback.
The Green Flag In Progress isn't smooth. He forgets to text back sometimes. His plans occasionally wobble. Early on you had to tell him that 'k' is not a complete sentence. But here's the thing that puts him on the green side of the ledger: you told him once, and it changed.
Adjustment after feedback is one of the most underrated signals in dating. Anyone can perform perfect for three weeks. Only someone who actually cares performs better after hearing how they fell short.
The signs
- ·Feedback lands without a fight. You say what didn't work; he doesn't sulk, lawyer up, or flip it on you. He says 'fair' — and then it's different.
- ·Apologies come with behavior attached. Not 'sorry you feel that way' but 'you're right, I dropped that' — followed by not dropping it again.
- ·The trend line points up. Compare month one to month three. More consistent, more thoughtful, fewer of the old misses.
- ·The effort is his idea. You're not project-managing his improvement. He noticed, he adjusted, he came back better on his own steam.
His texts, translated
“you were right, i've been rubbish at replying this week. fixing it”
Ownership, no excuses, and a verb at the end. This text costs actual ego and it's worth ten smooth ones.
“i know last minute plans annoy you — so, dinner thursday? booked us a table”
He converted your feedback into a reservation. That's what listening looks like when it grows up.
The play
The line to hold with this one: reward the direction, keep the standard. Those aren't in conflict:
- ·Name the improvement out loud. 'I noticed, and I love it' is fuel. People repeat what gets appreciated.
- ·Don't grade on a curve forever. Progress that plateaus the moment you relax was a performance with a deadline. The trend has to survive comfort.
- ·Know the difference between a partner and a project. He improves himself, with your feedback as input. The moment you're doing the improving for him, you've been promoted to contractor — decline the job.
